My Philosophy for Tutoring Writing

My expertise is in lab reports, general scientific writing, and anthropology/sociology papers. In addition, I am proficient in tutoring the traditional academic essay and argumentative thesis.

Peer tutoring for writing should be a collaborative effort that helps the writer grow their relationship with writing. I try to focus on catering to the specific learning style of each writer so that everyone who comes into the Writing Center feels accepted and respected.

I really like to emphasize the importance of planning to my tutors. Although there are a variety of different writing processes, I think it is still important for every writer to at least plan a timeline. In my writing I like to outline what I am going to say, but when I am tutoring I like to offer a variety of methods we could work on together. I believe it is important to leave the direction of every session to the writer and I am merely there as a kind of coach. Sometimes session needs to be more directive and structured, but I think this knowledge may only come from working with a writer more than one time. On that note, I always ask someone I have never worked with if they have had a WC session or another tutoring experience. If they have, then I can ask what kind of tutoring style worked for them and if there is anything (that they know of) I can do to make the experience more effective and beneficial. Often writers are not totally sure, but I like to ask because every once in awhile someone will know exactly what worked for them or what didn't work for them.

For my first sessions with writers, I really try to make it my goal to come up with metaphors for writing. You can learn so much about a writer by hearing their metaphors. However, if a writer is very anxious about a paper I may breeze through some of the beginning material so that they do not feel like the session is going too slow and we are not getting to the paper quick enough. I am a definite follower of the concept of high-order concerns and low-order concerns.

I have attached a couple documents of my WC work:
